Tomodachi

“We are Tomodachi” is the new slogan for Japanese, US relationships. The word means ‘friends’. An easy word with difficult dynamics given how different the two countries are in mindset and values.

Ken Shimanouchi, a career Japanese diplomat, shared his views during a luncheon in his honor. The Americans, he maintains, are militarily aggressive. The Japanese value a defensive approach designed to protect the people of this small Island nation.

This cultural mindset manifests itself in everyday life. When Japan was devastated by the Tsunami, people waited patiently in line for food, water and essentials. In America, there is very little patience. Japan has some of the lowest global rates for gun violence. America is the poster child for senseless killing. Japan personifies one value — grace under pressure.

To think that these two countries were enemies only 70 years ago. Today, we are friends. “There are no perpetual enemies and no perpetual allies”, Ken said with a stoic look. “The will to try and understand each other is the key to world peace”.

Well said Mr. Shimanouchi. Well said.
