I have been amazed at the athletic prowess in professional sports on display these past few weeks. The ability to fly through the air to dunk a basketball, smack baseballs a mile, and hit golf balls with precision and power is enviable and unfathomable to say the least.
As fans, we admire the skills and talent of these world class athletes. We love the entertainment of sports as it fuels are competitive juices. We may even quietly envy the big money, the adulation and fame for these players who make a living doing what they love.
That’s the key — they do what they love.
There is no denying that God given physical ability and talent are part of the equation, but what we lose sight of and under appreciate is the effort, time, and training that goes into a professional level of performance.
While most of us will NEVER gain any significant expertise in our sport of choice (Yes, I can still stink up a golf course as well as anyone in this world) there are lessons to be learned.
Discipline, work-ethic, integrity, dedication, and a keen competitive spirit are traits we can all effectively bring to the workplace. We may never be better athletes, but employing these characteristics certainly has the potential to make us better at work and at play.
Time to go and work on that golf swing!
