When a Hire Goes Wrong

puzzle

A dear friend, a CEO of a major organization, was clearly troubled by a high level hire that has been less than ideal. A cultural disconnect has left my buddy feeling tied up in knots. The promise of competence and the bright lights of the resume have been disappointing, to say the least. Why do some people always look better on paper, and why do they oversell themselves and under deliver?

The dilemma is real. Is it appropriate to coddle marginal performance and cultural deviants, or is it time to part ways? Worrying about a public relations backlash and secretly hoping things will change make the decision difficult to execute.

For me, the answer is crystal clear.

When people don’t fit into the company and don’t buy into the value system, they must go — sooner than later. When people don’t belong, then it is in everyone’s best interest to part ways. Holding on to the wrong people does more harm than good.

Time to act. Time to part ways.
