When It Pours…

rain

It’s been the worst rainstorms we have seen in Tampa for over a decade. Major parts of the city are flooded and the ground is saturated to desperate levels. Of course, this rain deluge coincides perfectly with my University of Tampa team playing host to 70 executives from Brazil, for a week long leadership seminar.

Picture this scene — pouring rain, a couple of 16-seater vans to transport delegates to the University and accentuated traffic and road closure delays in a water logged city. Not ONE complaint, or rolling of the eyes, or frustrated body language from a single individual. They took it all in stride, with patience, a smile, and the now familiar “Obrigado” (thank you).

I can’t imagine a group of 70 American executives behaving with the same decorum. Their patience threshold would be low and the ‘angry birds’ would be out in full force. I could see the demands for refunds coming quickly. And the massacre would continue on social media.

The main reason I enjoy this Leadership program is that the Brazilians are so appreciative of everything we do. It makes us want to work harder to make their experience even more special. They enjoy being in America, and have a sense of gratitude that is refreshing.

As for those of us in America who complain about everything — take a deep breath, roll with the punches and practice patience. Even when it pours, being flexible and empathetic makes it pleasant for everyone involved. It never hurt to dance a little bit in the rain.
